Arie Van Lent played as striker for seven years with Werder. He won one German Bundesliga title and two German Cups with the Green-Whites and wrote Bundesliga history in the 1996-97 season as the only player to have scored an own goal and then three more goals for his own team. WERDER.TV was at a game of the Werder U23s in Ahlen and used the chance to talk to the Dutchman and current head coach at Rot Weiss Ahlen about the up-coming German Cup match on Saturday, 14 August 2010. WERDER.DE presents parts of the interview.
Mr. Van Lent, how anxious and with what expectations do you look forward to the game against Bremen?
The anticipation of course is high. When you play against Werder Bremen in the first round it’s a nice draw for the club. You also know that the German Cup has its own set of laws. Werder will eventually lose, maybe not as late as the final. And of course I hope it happens here. And the whole club hopes that. We are looking forward to the game and I am personally looking forward to Thomas Schaaf since we don’t see each other that often any more. I hope it will be a nice day for us.
What memories do you have of the cup from your time with Werder?
I won the cup twice with Werder but I was not on the pitch that much. I was more of a reserve player than a true team player.
Are you preparing your team specially for the game or is this just like another league game for you?
You can’t really call it normal. It is after all against a first division side and the stadium will be nearly sold out. The atmosphere will be something special. For me on the sidelines, it’s somewhat easier because I know that everyone expects Werder to win the game. We will try to hold that off as long as possible.
