Felix Kroos has been the biggest winner of Werder's season preparations thus far as the acquisition from Hansa Rostock was brought in expected to strengthen the U23 team with a perspective down the road of joining the professionals. But the 19-year-old has impressed in his chance to present himself in the training camps and test matches. Kroos has completed all training sessions with the Bundesliga team and could be a serious alternative for head coach Thomas Schaaf's professional squad.
"What we have been able to estimate has come from watching him ourselves in training. And he has confirmed them completely. He does some very nice things with the ball and plays very productively. He certainly has some things to improve upon such as in moving backwards and playing without the ball," said Schaaf of his impressions. But the coach's opinion is hardly a surprise as Kroos mainly played as a striker with Hansa Rostock. Schaaf meanwhile sees Kroos more set in the midfield.
Schaaf did not say if Kroos would remain in the line-up with Pizarro, Frings and Co. when the season begins on Saturday with the German Cup match in Ahlen. "He is with us for right now. We can watch him the next couple days and then we will decide on Friday what the roster of the U23 and Bundesliga teams look like," said the coach.
