Werder midfielder Philipp Bargfrede and the German U21 national team lost their European Championship qualifier against Iceland 4-1 (1-0)in Hafnarfjördur, meaning they will miss the 2011 tournament in Denmark. The German team would have needed victories in their final three qualifiers to make the Euros. German now cannot defend their title from 2009.

 

Bjarnason (5'), Sigurdsson (53'), Sigthorsson (56') and Finnbogason (84') scored the goals for Iceland while Kevin Großkreutz had equalised for Germany 1-1 in the 49th minute. Bargfrede started the game for Germany but was subbed out in the 58th minute.
