The Bundesliga home strait and on this Sunday, 08.05.2005 at 5:30pm the dethroned champions Werder Bremen travel to the Westfalen stadium to face Borussia Dortmund on what will be the third last match of the 2004/2005 season. The Green-Whites will travel to Dortmund with renewed confidence after last weeks emphatic win over Armenia Bielefeld but equally with the knowledge that a rejuvinated Borussia are now on a six game unbeaten run during which they have scored 14 goals.

Only a win will do for Werder as they strive for the lucratively essential Champions League spot. Last weeks performance against Bielefeld will have instilled renewed confidence in the leagues second most successful away side that they can take three points away from the Westfalen stadium. Headcoach Thomas Schaaf believes his side have returned to form at exactly the right stage of the season: "It's not yet quite what it could be but on the whole we're headed in the right direction. In Dormund we can and must prove that."

Schaaf: "Looking forward to the crowd"

The staff at Werder are well aware of the fact that the ease with which they breezed past Armenia will not be the case in Dortmund. "I'm expecting a real battle. BVB are on the up-and-up, they've regained their stability and want to offer their fans something", explained Schaaf. A crowd of over 80,000 is expected to greet Werder in a couldron of yellow and black - but that dosen't worry the Werder coach, in fact quite the opposite: "The crowd will spurn us on, we're looking forward to that and will go into the game highly motivated."

Trainer Bert van Marwijks side have made distinct improvenents after a less than satisfactory start to the season. BVB have collected 28 points from 14 post-winter games securing a current eighth position and getting within grasp of a European place next season: "Our goal is still to qualify for the UI-Cup", explained Sportdirector Michael Zorc. "But we still haven't given up hope of a UEFA-cup spot.

Werder without injured trio

Turmoil at the Dortmund club caused by their economic situation has had a distinctly negative effect on the team. So far as presence and quality are concerned, the Yellow-Blacks are still quite a way from their old selves. Yet still, as far as the quality of the individual players is concerned - BVB are still one of the top sides in the league. The return of Christoph Metzelder has stabilized the defence and to face Werder the until recently injured captain Christian Worns will also make a comeback. Thomas Schaaf also pointed out the midfield of Kringe, playmaker Thomas Rosicky and the head strong Sebastian Kehl as a trio who can "Get things moving forward." BVB's strike force is in equally top form with Smolarek, Ewerthon and Koller proving to be way above Bundesliga average. Who should stop Koller? "We'll find someone who can out spring him without the aid of a ladder!", commented Thomas Schaaf on Thursday.

So long as nothing happens between now and then, Werders squad shoul be the same one which faced Armenia Bielefeld last weekend. Still missing will be captain Frank Baumann (ankle operation), Ümit Davala (muscle tear) and Lisztes (ankle injury). Around 6,000 Werder fans will make the journey south to the Westfalen stadium to roar on their team.
