The speakers crackled, bass boxes boomed, the fans bellowed the names of their heroes – the atmosphere from the Weser Stadium was simply transported to the decidedly smaller Bremen Arena, and the roof was raised! In 2010, the 'Day of the Fans' again left the Green-White fateful overjoyed, in a wonderful atmosphere and with close contact to their idols.
As all the Werder heroes had finally taken to the stage, there were some interesting findings to note. New signing Marko Arnautovic put a halt to any rumours in his modest, Vienna style: "Hugo has a harder shot than I do." Arnd Ziegler had confronted the new man with the allegation that he could hit the ball even harder than 'Hammer Hugo' Almeida. In spite of the hefty schedule in the past week, with a training camp and a pre-season friendly in England, Per Mertesacker claimed, with a grin, to be feeling in good form: "After all, I don’t have to do all that much running on the pitch," commented the German international with a wink of the eye.
General manager Klaus Allofs took the opportunity at the team presentation to praise the fans for their unyielding support: "Thank you for the wonderful reception. It’s fantastic how you all support us. As I came out here and saw this, I’m sure I felt just as many others in the team did. I really got goose-pimples," said the emotional general manager. It was an atmosphere to raise the spirits of the head-coach, who was anything but happy after the game on Saturday: "Those experiencing the day here today will already be feeling a lot better. Thanks a lot!"
And so, the 'Day of the Fans 2010' drew to a close as "Wir Sind Werder Bremen" rang out around the Arena. See you again next year!
