"That was one of those games when you just don’t know what’s happened. But there are explanations for that too,” said Werder’s head coach Thomas Schaaf after the 1-5 (1-0) defeat to FC Fulham on Saturday afternoon: "The first half was very good, we displayed the things then that we had worked on in training. The only shortcoming was our failure to make use of the chances we created. We could have had a far more distinct lead and put ourselves in a better position. The second half was proof of the situation we are in right now. We wanted to see particular things but today a lot of those things were unnecessarily and carelessly implemented. Although not everything went according to plan going forward, you have to perform better defensively – we didn’t do that today. We are not demanding anything crazy, just that the effort is made. That is something that was very varied today."
Captain Torsten Frings was in agreement with his trainer: "We can’t afford to perform like that here. The second half was very bad. In the second period we destroyed a lot of the self-confidence that we had successfully gathered throughout the first half. We knew before hand that it couldn’t all work out perfectly though. We still have a lot of work to do."
