On the final full day of work at the training camp in Bad Waltersdorf, all the German World Cup participants were integrated into full team training once again. During an extended training match with their team mates, Marin and Özil were again causing an attacking threat, whilst Per Mertesacker and Tim Wiese took on their more defensive duties. In a spirited game, there were plenty of goals, one of which an own-goal planted into the top corner by Clemens Fritz, which left Tim Wiese no chance whatsoever. The goal of the day was scored by Aaron Hunt, who cracked a shot under the German national team keeper’s crossbar from 45 meters out.
One of the Werder teams was forced to finish the game a man down, after trainer Thomas Schaaf had sent Marko Arnautovic, who had become frustrated by a refereeing decision, on a run shortly before the end of the game: "I had to do a couple of laps, that was arranged with the coach," said the Austrian at the end of training.
The trainer had sent the new man to cool-off, but Schaaf didn’t feel it necessary to over-react to the incident: "Now we are hearing that it is going to be harder to work with Marko, but that’s an external interpretation. He got frustrated and we wanted to show him that he needs to act differently in such situations. We can’t afford something like that in a competitive game. We need to protect him from himself a bit and when he was sent running he had the peace and time to internalise that."
Schaaf is absolutely convinced that the Austrian can be good for Werder though: "I am asked about him quite often actually and I have always said that you need to get to know him in order to understand him better. I’m sure that all the Werder fans will get to know and love him".
Not involved in the training session were the still injured Sebastian Boenisch and Naldo, who both went through an individual training programme with 'Under 19' keeper Bernd Düker on the next pitch. Boenisch joined up with his colleagues again later in the evening and completed the full 5:30pm training session.
