On the drive-way to the team hotel, Tim Wiese recalled exactly how things were last year: "We had very good training conditions in Bad Waltersdorf and at the end of the season we finished in third place. I think it’s a good omen. From now it’s all about concentrated work." The trio of Tim Wiese, Per Mertesacker and Mesut Özil were very realistic, even before their arrival at Graz Airport, where they landed with a 40 minute delay, what awaits them in the coming days: "Our team mates already have two very intensive training camps behind them. I was involved once on Norderney, so I know what I’m talking about," said Per Mertesacker.
But the German international is by no means in fear of the challenge: "It’s no new start for the three of us. Everyone has stuck to his training plan and the rest we can make up for with match practice in the coming weeks." Mesut Özil is equally composed: "I know the situation from last year, when I got started just as late because of the ‘Under 21 European Championships’. I’m already really looking forward to the season and I am well aware that running and hard work are very much a part of the pre-season preparations. But that can be fun too."
Just how things are to continue for the trio over the next few days will be decided upon by the trainer, but they are all raring to go. Tim Wiese said on Monday evening: "I don’t know the plans of the trainer yet and I don’t know if I will be in goal against Belgrade tomorrow. One thing is clear, I feel good. Those who know me know just how ambitious I am and that I always put in the extra shifts to get things going." The German international keeper is not quite ready to set big targets just yet though: "We need to remain modest. There is no point in talking about winning the championship at the 'Day of the Fans' and then not achieving that."
