Werder Bremen suffered their first loss in a test match in the build-up to the 2010-11 season, losing 2-1 against Hungarian team Szombathelyi Haladás. A tired Bremen side tried to make up from a poor first half and a 2-0 halftime deficit but could not equalise the game as Hugo Almeida’s goal in the 77th minute was not enough in the game in Hungary. Sebastian Prödl scored in the 90th minute but the referees ruled that the ball bounced ahead of the goal line.

Early deficit from possibly offside position

In sunny conditions and 22 degrees Celsius at Rohonci Úti stadium, head coach Thomas Schaaf started Sebastian Mielitz in goal behind a backline of Clemens Fritz, Peter Niemeyer, Sebastian Prödl and test player Juan Barros in defense. A midfield of Philipp Bargfrede, Aaron Hunt and Felix Kroos was topped by the three-man attack of Marko Arnautovic, Hugo Almeida and Claudio Pizarro. Werder struggled getting into the game and the Hungarians from Szombathleyi were able to take over the game early, scoring goals in the ninth and 42nd minute. Werder improved in the second half as Hugo Almeida scored to make it 2-1.

"We woke up too late. In the first half we did not find our way into the game and were not present and were too passive. That which we did well in the last games – harmonising with one another – did not happen today. It was better in the second half and we created some chances which we did not use. You can make the argument that we trained too much and were a bit tired and that we lacked the spark and freshness," said head coach Thomas Schaaf after the game.
