A home win has been a long time in coming for the Werder faithful. One point and one goal in front of their own fans was the cause of much frustration but the 'Weser Curse' was broken against Bielefeld. Thomas Schaafs side brushed Bielefeld aside with a 3:0 win during which the Green-Whites displayed high quality football over long periods in front of almost 40,000 ecstatic spectators. Ludovic Magnin broke the deadlock two minutes before half-time. After the break Tim Borowski (53') and Miro Klose (78') both struck to seal the points which see Werder climb back into fourth place and a mere two points adrift of a Champions League place.

Schaaf reacted to last weeks 2:1 defeat by Bayer Leverkusen with one change to the starting eleven. Ludovic Magnin replaced Ümit Davala and Paul Stalteri switched to the right to allow Magnin to fill the left back position.

Magnin on the mark

Werder stumbled through the opening phases and Bielefeld did their level best to make it difficult for the home side. Bremen looked at their most threatening when they cut out the middle man and played long balls to the front players. In the 28th minute Klasnic used this tactic to send Klose on his way. The German international rounded keeper Hain and then went down under the challenge. Referee Fandel pointed to the spot and showed the keeper the yellow card. Then one of the most curious scenes of the season followed when following consultation with his assistant and Miroslav Klose changed his decision and retracted the yellow card. A fair gesture from Klose who admitted the keeper had played the ball.

The guest took their chance to venture into the opposing box. Reinke underestimated a Porcello corner and Boakye rose to meet the cross only to have Jensen clear his headed effort from the goalline. Just as the crowd planned to accept a 0:0 half time score, Werder turned the screws. Hain came and punched Jensens corner clear but the clearance fell to Tim Borowski who attempted to shoot but miskicked the ball which then landed right at the feet of Ludovic Magnin who converted easily from point blank range.

Werder raise their game

The half time lead gave Werder the shove they needed for the second 45 minutes and much went through Johan Micoud who had regained some of his lost form. It was the Frenchman whose perfectly placed pass found Ivan klasnic seven minutes after the restart. The Croatian headed down to Tim Borowski who profitted from a defensive slip and buried past a defenceless Hain (53'). Those who expected the Green-Whites to sit back on their two goal cushion would be sadly mistaken. The hosts played flowing aggressive football and continued to press their guests. Valerien Ismael almost extended Werders lead in the 56th minute but could only watch on in frustration as his header bounced away off the top of the crossbar.

It was really only a matter of time before the homeside sealed the deal. Having just before seen his header go wide of the mark, Miroslav Klose made sure of it in the 78th minute. Klasnic was sent on his way with a pass from Fabian Ernst. The Croatian drove the ball into the box where Klose collected the ball on his chest, foxed his marker and buried with his left. 3:0 for Werder. It was the final scene in a tie which saw Werder return to form and find the net with relative ease.
