The Werder players hear it gladly though the fans on Norderney somewhat less. The intensive and strength-draining training camp on the North Sea island is slowly coming to a close. The final full day of training before departure on Thursday is quite tough. Despite high summer temperatures of 30 degrees, head coach Thomas Schaaf ordered his Green-Whites to the usual morning run on the beach before morning and afternoon training sessions on the pitch. Five Bremen players however could not take part in regular training on Wednesday. Aaron Hunt, Sebastian Boenisch, Tim Borowski, Dominik Schmidt and Leon Balogun had slight knocks from the team’s test match against KFC Uerdingen.

"Aaron Hunt and Sebastian Boenisch have thigh muscle problems and Dominik Schmidt has adductor pain so that all three had to leave training and reduce training work," said coach Schaaf after the morning session. "Tim Borowski received a knock on the ankle during warm-ups yesterday and later in the game which swelled up overnight. Therefore he really couldn’t run right and is underway with the bike," said Schaaf. Leon Balogun was hit worst as the new acquisition from Hannover collided with Dominik Schmidt during the test match against Uerdingen and suffered a jaw injury. "He returned to Bremen last night and was treated in the Mitte clinic. Luckily nothing was broken in the jaw. But the teeth had to be straightened and set," said Schaaf. "He will have to wear a protective mask for six weeks and will miss two weeks of training."

Also not back on the pitch is Naldo. The Brazilian was checked out on Tuesday in Bremen. "A minor inflammation was diagnosed in his knee which has to be subsided first before he can come back to training. When that will happen, I cannot say at this moment," said Schaaf, who will now have to see which players are available for the match against Kickers Emden. Definitely out will be Torsten Frings as the captain, who had groin surgery about a week ago, left the island in the afternoon after watching the Green-Whites’ game against Uerdingen.
