Sometimes things in football go very quickly. Within a couple days you are suddenly in the spotlight and playing regularly on the big Bundesliga stage in front of millions of fans. That's how things happened for Philipp Bargfrede. The 21-year-old was Werder's top rising player last season and became a regular and an important part of the Green-Whites. All told, he played 23 Bundesliga matches, five German Cup games and six Europa League contests in his first professional season.
"I made an extremely big jump last season," said Bargfrede of his quick development. "After the season I quickly realised that the season was sensational for me and you could not have expected that ahead of time." But the midfielder remains grounded. "Very little has changed in my life. I am a bit more recognised on the street than beforehand. But I have to live with that," said the German U21 international. Bargfrede also received tips from his father along the way. "But I am old enough to decide for myself and I know that it does not help move forward if I start beginning to dream now," said Bargfrede.
"Some times downhill goes quicker than uphill"
The midfield clean-up man still has room to improve especially offensively as he yet to score a Bundesliga goal. "I have not put myself under pressure because of that and will not do that in the future. I am trying to keep the balls clean in training and some time will break the knot," said a confident Bargfrede. But the midfielder is unsure how his celebration will be when he finally scores. "I'm not really the kind of guy who thinks of something like that ahead of time. I will decide spontaneously and fitting for the situation," he said.
