3-2 win over Uruguay: Werder quartet third at World Cup

The Werder players Mesut Özil, Per Mertesacker, Marko Marin and Tim Wiese and the German national team finished third at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. Germany beat Uruguay 3-2 (1-1) in the third place game Saturday night in Port Elizabeth. Mertesacker and Özil were once again in the starting line-up and each had a strong showing. Marko Marin and the injured Tim Wiese did not play.

 

Thomas Müller gave Germany the lead in the 19th minute but Uruguay went ahead on goals by Edinson Cavani (28th) and Diego Forlan (51st). Marcel Jansen equalised in 56th and Stuttgart’s Sami Khedira scored the game winner in the 82nd minute. The 3-2 victory gave Germany third place at the World Cup, repeating the team’s performance from the 2006 World Cup.
