Last winter break Sandro Wagner transferred from MSV Duisburg to SV Werder Bremen. But the aftermath of a torn ACL accompanied the 22-year-old well into the second half so that the U21 European champion could only make appearances with Werder’s U23 team and not play once in the Bundesliga for the Green-Whites. But that should change as Wagner hopes to make his way into the professional side this up-coming season.
"The preparations are certainly very positive for me. After my injury and the appearances with the U23s, this time is helping me make a big step forward," said the Munich native. And in order to make his way into the Bundesliga with Werder, the former Duisburg player is gladly working hard on Norderney. "I heard ahead of time that this training camp is very exhausting, and I can only confirm that. The run along the beach today was pretty tough, also because Wolfgang Rolff was riding his bike ahead of us and you could see in the distance how far away the finish was," said Wagner, who had a dream come true in the move to Werder. "I had some other good offers back then but have always liked Werder and I am convinced of the club management and everything around the club. That’s why I decided for Bremen in the winter. And the fact that I am with Werder now is super," said Wagner.
And Wagner knows exactly what he wants. "If I stay healthy then I am confident enough to say that I can score goals and bring Werder forward," said the 22-year-old. A successful season for Wagner would be scoring a lot of goals. "I don’t want to set a certain number, but it doesn’t help if I have a lot of appearances and don’t score. Strikers are measured by goals and only then am I satisfied. And I will give everything I have so that it works out," said the striker. And Wagner is not shying away from the battle for a starting spot with the likes of Claudio Pizarro and Co. "I am not really able to say that I want to take over for Claudio, who has already done so much for Werder. But if I am scared of names then I picked a difficult way with Werder. But I am convinced that I can push through," said Wagner. The striker’s top qualities are his quickness and technique. "There are not a lot of strikers who combine physical size and technique," said Wagner, who will have his first chance to excel in the test match on Monday against KFC Uerdingen.
