The Werder players early Thursday completed the first practice session as part of the training camp on Norderney. After the players’ arrival, they were given a short break before head coach Thomas Schaaf asked them to the training pitch at 6 p.m. Not with the team were centre back Naldo and captain Torsten Frings, the latter who underwent an operation in the morning.
While Torsten Frings could not make the trip to Norderney, Naldo is at the training camp despite minor knee problems. His team-mates were sweating during different passing and game drills on the pitch while the Brazilian was busy working on the bicycle. "Naldo came with to intensively take care of himself," said Thomas Schaaf. "We cannot name a time point when he will return to team training, but we hope it will be the case in the next few days."
Things appear more concrete regarding Torsten Frings, who went to Berlin Wednesday night for treatment and then was operated on Thursday morning. "Missing him is tough because Torsten will miss a large portion of the preparations where much of the foundation for the entire season is made. The surgery however was important to finally take care of the injury," said Schaaf. "We expect him to be able to return in about four weeks and that fits in with the later start of the Bundesliga," added the coach.
