Werder Bremen have already experienced their first setback of the very young season as captain Torsten Frings had to undergo groin surgery Thursday morning in Berlin with Dr. Jens Krüger and will miss four weeks of action. The midfielder will therefore not travel to the training camp on Norderney.
"Of course it's aggravating, but we cannot change it. He has had the occasional problem with the groin already in the past months. We are not going crazy because he will come back and hopefully he will be back to play at the start of the season," said head coach Thomas Schaaf about losing Frings. The coach said he had heard from Berlin that the operation went well.
Werder left for Norderney with 27 players, including the two Peruvian test players Juan Barros and Aldo Corzo. Centre back Naldo is expected to return to the team on Friday after missing the first training sessions with knee problems. Bremen will remain on the North Sea island until 15 July 2010 preparing for the up-coming season.
