The third placed team from the Bundesliga last season started their preparations for the 2010-11 season in summer temperatures. Werder head coach Thomas Schaaf called the team in during the afternoon for the obligatory lactate test. Previously new acquisitions Felix Kroos and Marko Arnautovic had been active in the test of the new jersey. The first impression of the new gear: it’s a nice sight. But neither really paid attention to the details. "For me it’s only important that the Werder diamond is on it. Then I’m in the right place. Everything else doesn’t matter," said Arnautovic. But the Austrian definitely cares about having a good start along the Weser. "I want to make my way through. I am really training now and we’ll see how fit in – whether it’s up front, or if there is a spot for me on the right or left side," said Arnautovic. The mood for all the players was very relaxed after a five-week football break. Manager Klaus Allofs welcomed by handshake most of the players before entering the provisional dressing room wing in the athletics hall of Weser Stadium. "I was in South Africa and had holiday after that. Now I am really happy that it’s getting started again. It just is more fun when you are close to a team," said the former German international striker.
Head coach Thomas Schaaf showed off his sunny side at the first press conference of the season. When asked if the players’ wives would be able to visit the Werder team training camp he answered: "Yeah, if we ever get to play in a World Cup, then we will have that as well." Even before the start of training there was praise for the outfitter Nike on the new jersey and training kit. "It’s something new and I’m eased that I have already heard criticism of it," grinned Allofs. "That was the same case in 2003, and then we won the double and the jersey was a big hit." Regarding the jagged design on the front, he said: "The designers always think a lot about how it should emanate sporting aggressiveness. From others I have heard that it could symbolise the course of the season. I wouldn’t mind that, for then we would be at the top in the end after fighting through the middle portion. But the jersey definitely sparks the imagination. All in all we are very satisfied. Together with the new training kit, it gives us a fine appearance," said Allofs.
