Missing from the start of training for Werder Bremen was Christian Vander, who is still labouring on his pubic bone inflammation and also missed the lactate test. "It will still take some time. I am undergoing regular therapy. There was not a setback. It is getting gradually better. But I have to be a little patient," said the Bremen backup keeper. Daniel Jensen will also be unavailable for an undisclosed period of time. The Danish international, whose team bowed at in the first round of the World Cup, has been fighting a thigh injury since South Africa. "It is not a good situation with him. We will certainly have to do without him for some time," said manager Klaus Allofs.

Signs are showing that three players may soon be leaving Werder. Jurica Vranjes, who became a father on Saturday, is expected to be on the Weser Stadium training grounds on Wednesday or Thursday, but the 30-year-old will then be keeping fit with the U23 players. "He doesn’t really play a role in our sporting plans. We talked about that again today. We will look for another club with him together," said Allofs about the situation for Croatian, whose No. 7 jersey from last season will be worn by new acquisition Marko Arnautovic.

The Carlos Alberto chapter also could close, though it may take some time. "He is still a Werder Bremen player. We are holding intensive talks with Vasco da Gama. It could be that he will continue to play there. But the signs are clearly pointing to him not coming back to Bremen," said Allofs. Striker Markus Rosenberg could also leave Bremen. "We – he, himself as well – were not satisfied with his performance last year. Therefore we have expressed our willingness to not get in the way. If a club makes an acceptable offer, his path will lead away from Werder," continued the manager.

The management team does not see any time pressure in personnel questions. "The phase in which clubs are looking at how their rosters are built and where they want to improve themselves is just beginning. And the transfer window is still open another seven weeks," said Allofs. The manager also confirmed his interest in the Brazilian player Wesley. "Yes, we have made an offer to FC Santos for Wesley. But one can hear that they are not satisfied. But our possibilities are limited. If the demands exceed a certain level, then we cannot make the transfer."
