The World Cup in South Africa has been over for Hugo Alemeida since Tuesday evening, with Portugal losing 1-0 (0-0) against Spain. WERDER.DE spoke with the striker shortly after the unlucky elimination from the tournament, asking about his personal recollections of the World Cup, his experience in South Africa and his plans for the coming season.
Hugo, you and the Portuguese national team lost 1-0 against the reigning European champions Spain in the Round of 16 at the World Cup. How big is the disappointment, going out so unluckily?
We had the right circumstances of advancing very far at this World Cup. Getting eliminated was a little bit unlucky, but we knew that we would only have difficult games. It is very sad having to head home early.
You played in two matches at the World Cup and scored one goal. What do you think of your performance?
When I got the chance to play I played well. I had a good game against North Korea and sat on the bench against Brazil for tactical reasons. The game against Spain was not very good because they took away our entire offensive plans. But I wish I could have done more for the team. Every player feels like that when his team loses.
And how was the experience for you, participating in your first World Cup?
It was fantastic. Every player dreams about playing for his national team at a World Cup. And it was the same for me. The feeling of fulfilment is unbelievable, really a dream come true. Unfortunately we were eliminated in the second round. But it was still a great experience.
Where you able to follow the World Cup games of your Bremen team-mates?
I tried to watch the most of them. But it was not always possible due to training sessions and all sorts of other things. Of my Werder friends, (Mesut) Özil made the biggest impression. He has played a brilliant World Cup, and I think he has played really well for Germany.
Which team will win the World Cup in your opinion?
I think Brazil, Germany and Argentina are the teams with the biggest chances of winning. Brazil have a very sold team, but also Germany and Argentina are playing very well.
What are your plans now? Are you heading on holiday? When can we see you in Bremen again?
I will be spending my holiday with my family in Portugal. But I will be back in Bremen soon.
What goals to you have for the coming season?
I want to give my best for Werder once again. We are in the qualification for the Champions League and that will be a big task.
