Germany’s 4-1 victory over England Sunday afternoon in the Round of 16 included strong showings by Werder players Mesut Özil and Per Mertesacker and was seen by 25.57 million viewers on television in Germany.
"I am very proud of the team," said Werder playmaker Mesut Özil after the game. "We pushed forward from the first minute on. We showed that as a team we can achieve everything if we stick together. We played at a world class level." Özil also spoke confidently of the difficult task ahead in the quarter-finals against Argentina. "It doesn’t matter who our opponent is. We will give our all and advance another round. Our dream is the title. We want to beat everyone," said Özil.
The Werder players and the rest of the German national team was also praised by head coach Joachim Löw. "That was a great performance by a young team against an experienced England side. We were able to take apart the English defence. We needed to use our chances of quickly getting into the area. And we did that a couple of times excellently," said Löw. "The team learned from the Ghana game. I sense the confidence and the courage in the players. We take our strength from our quality. We can change our rhythm and the tempo at any time."
