Werder Bremen’s German internationals have reached the quarter-finals of the 2010 World Cup with a convincing 4-1 over England with both Mesut Özil and Per Mertesacker coming up with strong showings.
Miroslav Klose (20th) and Lukas Podolski (32nd) gave Germany a 2-0 lead before Matt Upson (37th) brought the Three Lions to within 2-1. Thomas Müller scored twice in the second half (67th and 70th) as the Germans will next face Argentina in the quarter-finals. Klose gave Germany the lead as he ran onto a goal kick by keeper Manuel Neuer, fended off a defender before beating England keeper David James for his 50th goal in 99 caps for Germany. It was the 32-year-old Klose’s 12th goal in his third World Cup. Podolski’s goal from a tight angle was set up by Müller as the Cologne striker scored his 40th goal for Germany.
Upson’s header made it 2-1 and Germany were lucky that a shot by Frank Lampard off the lower half of the crossbar clearly crossed the goal line and bounced back into play but was not ruled a goal in the 38th minute by Uruguay referee Jorge Larrionda and his linesman Mauricio Espinosa. In the second half, the English increased the pressure but Germany used their counter attack to bring home the win. Bastian Schweinsteiger fed Müller in the 67th minute and the Bayern striker beat James to make it 3-1. And then Müller collected a fine pass by Mesut Özil to score the final goal three minutes later.
