It's been two days since Werder's German internationals had to accept a 1-0 loss against Serbia. At the Germans' World Cup camp, Per Mertesacker has addressed the defeat and is looking forward to the up-coming game against Ghana on Wednesday.
"We deserved to win despite playing a man down," said the Werder defender of the Friday game. Mertesacker used the free afternoon on Saturday for a friendly "North Derby" of table tennis against Hamburg's Piotr Trochowski. Despite the tense mood in the team, Werder's vice captain said the German side is ready for the final group match. "Now we have to see the game against Ghana as a Round of 32 match. It is absolutely a knockout game for us," said Mertesacker, who had no doubts the team would advance to the next round. "We are so united that we can withstand this pressure and will move on. Despite the loss against Serbia, we played how we had hoped to play." And the team also had a fighting spirit in their selection of the movie in the hotel theatre Velmore Grande. Along with Werder team-mate Tim Wiese and other German colleagues, Mertesacker watched the film Payback.
