The German national team lost their second Group D match of the 2010 World Cup against Serbia 1-0 on Friday. Per Mertesacker, Mesut Özil and the substitute Marko Marin could not keep the German team – which played the final 53 minutes a man down after the yellow-red card for Miroslav Klose – from losing the game.
German national team coach Joachim Löw had the same starting line-up in Nelson Mandela Bay stadium as he did in the 4-0 opening win over Australia – meaning with Per Mertesacker and Mesut Özil. Miroslav Klose was sent off with a second warning in the 37th minute and Germany watched Milan Jovanovic score the decisive goal in the 38th minute. Lukas Podolski missed the biggest chance to equalise when his penalty attempt after a handled ball in the 60th minute was stopped. Germany could not turn the game around despite the substitutions of Marko Marin for Thomas Müller (70th) and Cacau for Mesut Özil (70th) and Mario Gomez for Holger Badstuber (77th). And Germany will have to get over their 1-0 defeat.
