The vuvuzela is the hottest topic of the World Cup in the past few days. The instrument is the cult symbol of African football and has been heatedly discussed since the beginning of the World Cup. Critics call them too loud and too annoying as well as bad for your health and are calling for a vuvuzela ban in stadiums.

But how do players on the pitch react to the atmosphere which is somewhat unusual for Europeans? One of them who should know is Werder Bremen youth international Lennart Thy. He experienced the vuvuzelas and the atmosphere in African stadiums first hand at the U17 World Championship in Nigeria, standing on the pitch for Germany in the opening match against the hosts in front of 40,000 spectators. "I had never heard of the vuvuzelas before then. It is an entirely different atmosphere and takes getting used to. And the atmosphere is even more emotional when you’re playing against the host nation in a sold out stadium. The spectators were blowing their horns for 90 minutes," said the Werder talent.

Still, the 18-year-old did not consider the noise level disturbing. "Actually it was pretty nice. It was something different. The only time you notice the vuvuzelas is before and after the game or during breaks in action. Otherwise you blend out the spectators and noise."

Regardless, Lennart Thy was excited about football-crazy Africa. "Everywhere you go people were dancing and celebrating. You could really tell how much the people were excited about the games. That’s how it is in South Africa as well," said Thy. The youngster also brought with him a piece of Africa for his living room. "Of course I also brought with me a vuvuzela to revive the World Cup atmosphere. And it already has been in use when I watch the games with my family and friends. It hasn’t been taken away from me or banned yet."
