Werder Bremen’s German internationals came up with a dream start to the 2010 World Cup in South Africa as Per Mertesacker, Marko Marin and a superb Mesut Özil played in Germany’s 4-0 (2-0) victory over Australia.
Thanks to goals by Lukas Podolski (8th), Miroslav Klose (26th), Thomas Müller (68th) and Cacau (70th), Germany took over first place in Group D ahead of Ghana, who beat Serbia 1-0 earlier in the day in Pretoria.
The Germans’ victory was never in doubt and they deserved to win by the margin. Per Mertesacker was hardly challenged as centre back but came up with a concentrated showing; while Mesut Özil consistently drove the Germans’ creative offensive force, playing an excellent match as one of the best players on the pitch. Marko Marin played only the final nine minutes as substitute.
