Werder Bremen board chairman Klaus Allofs was flying to South Africa on Friday, right in time for the start of the World Cup. He left Bremen in the evening and will travel through Frankfurt to Johannesburg to take in the World Cup flair in Africa until Sunday 20 June 2010. "I will definitely watch the first two games of the German national team and as many other matches as possible in that time frame. Mainly I will try to watch games taking place in Johannesburg or Pretoria," Allofs said. "Another match is the game between Holland and Denmark with Daniel Jensen. There are certainly enough interesting players playing there," joked Allofs.
"The transfer business is no longer a matter of seeing and buying! But by watching a lot of players may you see the odd player who could be interesting under certain circumstances in one or two years," said the former German national team striker. Allofs also wants to make use of his extensive international experience during his working visit in South Africa. "The goal naturally is to visit our Werder players in the team hotel and see how things are going. A little bit of morale support can never hurt during such a long tournament," added Allofs.
In addition there is keeping up with the old contacts. "It just is normal that we as Werder Bremen should be present at such a big event," said Allofs. A number of interesting discussions are guaranteed. "I am staying in the hotel of the official German delegation, so you can’t avoid having the odd conversation," he said. Allofs also wants to keep in contact with the Werder employees in the scouting department. "Of course we are also represented with observers to stay up on the latest in the game," said the manager.
The Werder manager definitely will have plenty of fascinating days after he gets off the plane. Head coach Thomas Schaaf meanwhile has said he will not travel to South Africa. He will instead concentrate fully on the start of training on 5 July 2010. "I assume that that players who are in the spotlight there are way over our possibilities any way. I will be watching a lot of the games on television and certainly be on the telephone with Klaus Allofs a lot. So I will be on top of things," said Schaaf.
