The demolition work of the East Curve of Weser Stadium is complete. That finished off the first major step in the rebuilding of the East Curve. "We are right on schedule to the day with this project," said a pleased Wilfried Rehling, project head of the Bremen Weser Stadium Ltd. Following the final Bundesliga match against Hamburg, the team's offices, restaurant area and grandstands of the East Curve were vacated and gutted. Provisional accommodations for the performance centre and the boarding school were constructed. A major portion of the East Curve furnishings was disposed of while the seat shelling of the stands was put into storage for re-usage. And loads and loads of building rubble was taken away.
Werder's Champions League qualification match, however, will definitely be played at Weser Stadium. But the East Curve will not be available for fans in the first leg in Bremen. The lower level of the standing room area could be ready a week later. "But the spectators will have to make due with provisional kiosks and sanitary facilities," said Rehling. The interior of the East Curve must be completed by mid-August. That will be the biggest challenge for all involved. Not only must the home and away locker rooms be completed for the start of the season but also the medical and media areas. Between 60 and 70 workers are working each day on getting it ready. The countdown is on.
