Werder Bremen’s first competitive match of the 2010-11 season will take place at Rot-Weiss Ahlen. The relegated side in the third division was drawn as Bremen’s opponent in the first round of the German Cup, which will take place from 16-18 August 2010. The exact date of the game will be announced in the coming weeks.

For the Green-Whites, the game means a reunion with former Werder player Arie van Lent, who is head coach at Ahlen. Werder captain Torsten Frings was very happy to hear about facing the former Bremen player. "Is that true? Arie will be out first opponent! I am really looking forward to that. I still remember him as player with Werder. He is a really nice guy, who is a lot of fun and helped the younger players. Sports-wise, it’s a good opponent against whom we are favourites. And we should beat them," said Frings.

Head coach Thomas Schaaf had a similar reaction. "I am really looking forward to seeing how Arie works as coach. The task in Ahlen is clear for us. We have to overcome this hurdle. We want to start the season successful again," said Schaaf.
