Nearly 2,000 users logged onto WERDER.TV to follow live the introduction of new Werder acquisition Marko Arnautovic. The 21-year-old striker and manager Klaus Allofs spoke for the first time after the completed negotiations.
"We are very happy to be able to present with Marko Arnautovic the first new acquisition for the coming season. He takes his place in the run of young additions of the past years. He has proven his potential and will help us to reach our short-term goals of reaching the Champions League. And he will help us deliver on our big expectations in the Bundesliga," said Allofs. The manager also thanked Arnautovic's former club Twente Enschede. "We had some very good talks with Twente and came up with a quick agreement, also regarding finances," said Allofs. Italian champion Inter Milan, where Arnautovic played on loan last season, did not take part in the transfer, Allofs confirmed.
"I am very happy to have signed here and now be able to play for Werder," said Marko Arnautovic. "My goal is always to win titles and Werder has a team with a lot of potential. And the area looks very familiar," said Arnautovic in his Viennese dialect. After his time in Italy, the 21-year-old is really looking forward to the Bundesliga. "Now the only thing that matters is Werder. Other countries like Italy, England and Spain are not any stronger than Germany. Now I want to show my abilities and show what I can do and enjoy the time in the Bundesliga," said Arnautovic.
"Marko is very big and like the coach said: you can't teach 1.90m," said Klaus Allofs, adding: "His game in the air, his quickness are strong. In addition he plays with both feet and dangerous in front of goal. He is similar to the players we have recently signed. If you look Marko Marin and Mesut Özil at the (German national team) friendly against Bosnia-Herzegovina, you can see that Marko is also a player who can make the difference, set up goals and score them as well. I don't want to praise him too much yet, but we already have high expectations for him. We are certain that Germany will be another step for him, and he will take this step."
Arnautovic spent his time at Inter Milan - triple winners last season - working with coach Jose Mourinho. "Mourinho has achieved everything, he is number one. But now Thomas Schaaf is my coach, and he is the No. 1. Mourinho is as of today only No. 2," said Arnautovic.
