German national team coach Joachim Löw and goalkeeper coach Andreas Köpke have announced today at the team's camp in South Tyrol that Tim Wiese will serve as the first backup keeper to Manuel Neuer at the World Cup in South Africa. In addition, Per Mertesacker was named to the five-member team counsel.
After the number one keeper Réne Adler was ruled out injured, Schalke's Manuel Neuer was moved into the top spot between the post ahead of Wiese and Hans-Jörg Butt of Bayern Munich. "All three are very good keepers," said Joachim Löw, who added that his decision was very difficult. Butt will serve as the third string keeper.
Werder centre back Per Mertesacker was given an honour as well with Löw and his coaching team naming him into German team counsel along with Arne Friedrich, Miroslav Klose, Bastian Schweinsteiger and new captain Philipp Lahm. "Per has not only developed on the pitch but also in other areas as well," said Löw about the Werder player.
The German national team's first game at the 2010 World Cup comes Sunday, 13 June 2010 at 8:30 p.m. against Australia.
