Werder midfielder Mesut Özil played a full 90 minutes for the German national team in a last-minute organised test match against FC Südtirol, scoring the second goal in a 4-0 Germany victory. Özil reiterated that he believes in the German team despite a rash of injuries for the squad.

"Of course we are all very impacted by Michael Ballack's injury. It was bitter news for the team," said Özil at the DFB press conference on Tuesday. "It's also too bad about the loss of Christian Träsch. But we still have a strong team. We believe in ourselves," said the 21-year-old optimistically. "The World Cup title is our dream. We are certainly not going to South Africa just to play a couple games. We are preparing very hard. And even if it will be difficult, we can do it. We have a very strong team," added Özil.

Mesut Özil considers defender and Bremen team-mate Per Mertesacker a special player for the German team. "We talk a lot with one another and are good friends," Özil said of Mertesacker. "He helps me a lot because he is a very experienced player - both with Werder and the national team." While Özil played the full 90 minutes, the other three Werder players - Mertesacker, Marko Marin and Tim Wiese - received 45 minutes of action. German assistant coach Hans-Dieter Flick said a decision will be coming soon as to if Wiese will be the starting goalkeeper at the World Cup in South Africa. Also to be announced is which player will take over the injured Michael Ballack as the captain of Germany's national team.
