This will be a very special football weekend for Thomas Schaaf. The Werder Bremen coach is an official member of UEFA’s technical committee and has been invited to Madrid as an honorary guest at the Champions League final between Bayern Munich and Inter Milan. "I have the special honour of watching the game," said Schaaf, who will do more than just watch the showdown. The Bremen coach will evaluate the entire Champions League season technically and tactically along with other top coaches and analysts from European federations and top clubs. The committee of experts will also choose the best free action goals, top counter-attack scores and top goals following a passing combination.
"We will intensively look at the numbers and facts of the past season. I am happy that I was asked to take part. It shows just how much the work of Werder Bremen is respected at the European level," said Schaaf, who will return from Madrid on Sunday evening. The Werder coach, however, will not be an entirely neutral observer at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu. "I am happy that a German team reached such an important final. It will be a great game in a fantastic atmosphere. I hope that Bayern win the treble. And I think they have a realistic chance. On Saturday, I will be a Munich fan," said Schaaf. A victory for Bayern would be advantageous for the whole Bundesliga. With the points from the win, Germany would pass Italy in the UEFA rankings and gain an additional fourth spot in the Champions League starting in 2011.
