The final stage of the season has begun for all the remaining Werder players. On Tuesday morning head coach Thomas Schaaf called for the first training since losing the German Cup final. The preparations have begun for the final three games of the season - the friendly matches against Telgte, Oldenburg and in Osterholz-Scharmbek.

The huge disappointment has dwindled in the past 48 hours and the Green-Whites are clearly proud of their successful season. "We can play in the qualification for the Champions League and have the chance to compare ourselves with the best of the best. We were able to achieve a goal many of us could hardly dream about a couple of weeks ago. We have finished a year in which we had performances fitting of the roster. We lost a very dominating player in Diego and were still able to form a very strong team with some new and many young players. We had some ups and downs. But we also had many games which thrilled our fans in which we showed what Werder stands for. Our goal was fifth place and we finished third. Therefore, I would like to congratulate the team for the season," said Schaaf.

And the Werder players would like to present this positive attitude one more time over the final couple days. But some players will be missing for those games. Besides the players on national team duty, head coach Thomas Schaaf must also due without Sebastian Boenisch, who received a knock on the ankle in the German Cup final. Clemens Fritz had to undergo a minor surgical procedure and will not be available the next few days. And Petri Pasanen is still labouring under his calf injury. "We will have about 15 players for the games, though the roster can change slightly between the games," said Schaaf, who will also be missing an injured member of his coaching staff. Assistant coach Wolfgang Rolff underwent knee surgery on Monday and must sit out six weeks. "But I will try as best I can to keep working," said Rolff, who is currently walking on crutches.
