Nearly 300 fans gathered at the Bremen train station to welcome the German Cup express from Berlin. It was a nice gesture by the Green-White supporters, who wanted to show their appreciation despite the disappointment of the night before. It was also a show of respect for the tremendous season, which featured third place in the Bundesliga and once again reaching the cup final.
Bremen's mission to defend the cup ended otherwise quietly at the Bremen station and for some Werder players their time this season with the Green-Whites. Many players will be heading to their national teams. Head coach Thomas Schaaf bid farewell to his players and wished them all the best - especially staying injury-free. Among those leaving for national team duty were German World Cup nominees Marko Marin, Per Mertesacker, Tim Wiese and Mesut Özil as well as Hugo Almeida and Daniel Jensen from Portugal and Denmark, respectively.
Markus Rosenberg, Sebastian Prödl and Petri Pasanen have also been invited to test matches for their national teams. But it remains unclear if Pasanen can accept the invitation. The calf muscle problems which kept him out of the final in Berlin are still being examined and treated. Sebastian Prödl had to quickly pack his things upon his return to Bremen. "I have to swap my things and get to the airport in Bremen by 5 p.m. to get to a game with the national team. But I will be back in Bremen next week," said the Austrian.
All in all, it was quiet finish to the season. After the players got their German Cup silver medals they quickly left the changing rooms for a reception at the Berlin club Spindler & Klatt, where employees, sponsors, family and friends were waiting. Klaus Allofs opened the festivities with the following remark: "It was a very successful season which is worth celebrating." And the Bremen manager was sure that the guests would do just that. "Sometimes the parties with a small circle of friends after a loss are really good," noted Allofs, who was right with his remark. When the club closed the bar and dance floor at 5 a.m. there were still a good 80 guests who were celebrating their "lifelong Green-Whites" loudly without music.
