It was a clear result up on the Olympic Stadium’s scoreboard after 90 minutes. Werder Bremen lost the German Cup final 4-0 against Bayern Munich. But Bremen did have their chances. "We had to take advantage of two moments: the chances by Claudio Pizarro at the beginning of the game and then the chances at the beginning of the second half. Then we would have had an opportunity to win. But we couldn’t put them under pressure," said Werder manager Klaus Allofs after the game. Head coach Thomas Schaaf also congratulated the winners. "Congratulations to Bayern. All told it was a deserved loss," said the coach. "We had good chances but Bayern deserved to win in the end. Until the score for 1-0 we had played really well. But you also have to be an honest loser. The opponent was better today. We have to recognise that," said captain Torsten Frings.
A major point of criticism was Werder’s missed scoring chances. "Maybe the game would have gone differently if we led 1-0," said Sebastian Boenisch. "But Bayern were certainly better over the 90 minutes." Marko Marin agreed with his teammate’s assessment, saying: "Of course, the victory for Bayern was deserved." The main action in the 1-0 score for Bayern was Per Mertesacker’s handled ball, which the defender did not see as a clear offence. "I did not consciously want to play the ball with my hand. He shot from a close distance and I really could not control much in that movement. I would not consider that a deliberate handled ball," said Mertesacker.
"Bayern were more aggressive, and with Arjen Robben they of course had an extraordinary player," said Clemens Fritz. And that left Munich without a doubt that their superb form would eventually take over. "Bayern did what they had planned to do. We were not close enough to the opponents and did not really challenge enough,” added Fritz.
