Season complete: Satisfaction overtakes frustration

Tim Wiese was pretty much helpless on all four Munich goals. Bremen were cleverly beaten on the counter attack on Franck Ribéry’s goal for 3-0.

Werder Bremen had planned so much for the German Cup final at Berlin’s Olympic Stadium. The season should have ended with the first title defence of the German Cup in club history. But with a 4-0 loss against Bayern Munich, the Green-Whites had to accept defeat.

Still the bitter loss in the final could not drown out the satisfaction of a successful season. "We knew how much fun it was to win the cup, and we absolutely wanted to defend it. But it was an excellent season. The German Cup title would have been the cherry on top," said an aggravated Sebastian Boenisch about the missed opportunity.

Boenisch, who was a late replacement in the starting line-up for the injured left back Petri Pasanen, was not alone in that assessment. "It was a good season for the team and for me personally. We reached the final and finished third in the league," said Marko Marin. And manager Klaus Allofs added: "Today you saw that Bayern are clearly better than the rest of the league at the moment. Still we are disappointed about the result of the game. But the defeat against a very strong opponent can be traced back to one cause – we did not nearly play up to our potential."

Captain Torsten Frings was a fair loser after 90 minutes. "Today you have to be honest and congratulate Bayern on a strong performance and a deserved cup victory," said Frings. “But we shouldn’t get upset with the loss. We can be very proud of the season. And you have to be able to lose every now and again." And Boenisch made clear that Werder will not be sticking their heads in the sand. "We will do everything we can next season to play here again," said the defender. With their sights already set on next season, the Green-Whites took the chance after the game to celebrate the just-finished season with sponsors, honorary guests and employees.
