Werder Bremen players Daniel Jensen (Denmark) and Hugo Almeida (Portugal)have legitimate hopes of playing at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. Both players were nominated for their respective nation's provisional World Cup rosters.
Final rosters for the World Cup, which begins on 11 June in Johannesburg with the Opening Match between hosts South Africa and Mexico, must be submitted to FIFA by 1 June 2010. Denmark's national team coach Morten Olsen will reduce his roster from 30 to 23 players after the team's test match on 27 May against Senegal in Aalborg. Portuguese coach Carlos Queiroz meanwhile must only drop one player from his 24-man preliminary squad. Should Almeida be included in the final roster, he could play in the attack with the world superstar Cristiano Ronaldo.
It appears unlikely meanwhile that Werder defender Naldo will make Brazil's final roster. The 27-year-old centre back has earned four caps but Werder manager Klaus Allofs said: "There are not really any signs that he will be on the World Cup roster."
German national team coach Joachim Löw has named four Bremen players in his provisional squad. Keeper Tim Wiese, defender Per Mertesacker as well as midfielders Mesut Özil and Marko Marin can all hope to play in South Africa. But the four players will not be on hand for Germany's test match against Malta on Thursday, 13 May 2010, due to the German Cup final.
