The final game was a little like the whole season. It was super, then things got a little nervous. And in the end, Werder fans could end up celebrating!

It was 4:46 p.m. when the goal for Borrusia Mönchengladbach against Bayer Leverkusen was announced on the scoreboard, sending Weser Stadium into celebrations. And just two minutes later Claudio Pizarro pushed the atmosphere to another level with his classy heel goal. Everything seemed to be going right for the Green-Whites. But Werder’s resolve wavered. "We didn’t play very good football after my goal. And how things usually go in a derby, you have to start getting nervous. Hamburg started having chances which we had to fend off," said Pizarro.

Werder fans were very tense watching the pitch as the attacking Hamburg side knotted the game at 1-1 and watching what was going on in Gladbach, where Leverkusen only needed a goal for a victory. "We should have made things easier for ourselves after the lead. The great chance by Hugo (Almeida) could have decided everything and made it easier. But we stood our ground and made it through. A compliment to the team," said Bremen head coach Thomas Schaaf.

The team meanwhile praised their fans, who provided a great support on the final game day of the season. "You could tell that the atmosphere was tense. But we received the necessary support. The 12th man was there and we have to thank them for the support during the whole season," said Werder centre back Per Mertesacker.

The game was also sort of a good-bye to the East Curve, which will be torn down. Demolition work begins on Monday from the north side towards the players tunnel. And manager Klaus Allofs bid adieu to the East Curve during the half-time break by video message. "We are playing for the last time in front of the East Curve. It will be straight for next season, but we will always keep the name 'East Curve'. It will be even better for you, the fans. You will be closer to the action than ever before and the atmosphere in the stadium will be even better," said Allofs.

With the celebrations on Saturday evening, one can hardly imagine that’s possible.
