All players from Werder’s professional roster other than Christian Vander took part in Thursday’s training and will be available for nomination for Saturday’s North Derby against Hamburg. Despite the anticipation of the up-coming derby, the nominations of Germany’s provisional World Cup squad by Joachim Löw were of course a big topic of discussion.
Happiness for some and disappointment for others. While Tim Wiese, Per Mertesacker, Marko Marin and Mesut Özil were four Werder players nominated, Aaron Hunt was not considered for the provisional roster. "He played a superb season and had earned being nominated," said Hunt’s team-mate Philipp Bargfrede. And Marko Marin added: "I had hoped that Aaron would be there. But the coach decided how he did."
Werder head coach Thomas Schaaf regretted Hunt not being nominated. "I would have happy for Aaron Hunt to be there. He played a good season. We respect the decision of the national team coach but I am of the opinion that Aaron could have brought forward the national team," said Schaaf. Still, Bremen manager Klaus Allofs saw the announcement of the World Cup roster positively. "We feel that our transfer policy of continually going with young German players has been confirmed with four players on the roster," said Allofs.
The final training before the game against Hamburg takes place on Friday, 7 May 2010 at 3:30 p.m.
