What happens when a Werder fan drives through the desert with a Hamburg supporter? They experience the adventure of their lives and travel across Africa to the 2010 World Cup. The collective passion for football is stronger than any sports rivalry. David Gohl, who has been a Green-White supporter and Werder club member for more than 20 years, has been touring around the continent of Africa since 5 April 2010 with his friend and Hamburg fan Andreas Wiese. And on Saturday they will be rooting for their teams together - in Cameroon.
"A time to make friends" was the motto of the 2006 World Cup in Germany. "Now we, the friends, want to bring the positive atmosphere to Africa," said Wiese about the principle of his idea. His plan was to travel by car some 24,000 kilometres from Hamburg to the World Cup with David Gohla and seven other friends. The travellers hope to be sort of "ambassadors of football" and bring loads of information about Africa back to German, according to Gohla. In Africa, they will be visiting "Ein Herz für Kinder" ("A Heart for Children") institutions and various football matches to get to know the countries and the people. The final destination of the mammoth tour is the World Cup Opening Match in Johannesburg on 11 June 2010. But before that, the two Germans have another sports highlight - the North Derby on Saturday.
