One of the pleasant surprises of the 2009-10 seasons will remain with Werder Bremen as Philipp Bargfrede extended his contract until 2014. "I am happy that Philipp extended his contract," said Werder manager Klaus Allofs. "Both sides wanted to extend the deal so it was a goal orientated negotiation," summarised Allofs, who added: "Philipp has had an excellent development. He has become a starter and has a very good perspective. We are happy that we have locked up long term one of our own home grown players."
Head coach Thomas Schaaf was also pleased to continue the work with the Zeven native. "I am happy about the contract extension. He is a big talent who attracted a lot of attention this season. I think he has a great future with Werder," said the coach.
Philipp Bargfrede, son of the former Bundesliga player Hans-Jürgen Bargfrede, has played with Werder since 2004. Bargfrede, 21, made his way through the Green-Whites youth system and made his first U23 appearances in the 2007-08 season. The defensive midfielder has been in the Bundesliga roster since this season and appeared in 22 Bundesliga matches, four German Cup games and seven matches in the Europa League.
