Mesut Özil was Werder's match winner at Schalke, scoring the goal to make it 1-0 in his 100th Bundesliga match while also setting up Hugo Almeida's goal. "I am relieved that we had a good match and that I scored a goal again. The team really supported me well and made things easy," said a modest Özil. "It could not have gone any better. We knew that Schalke would open up and we would have our chances. And we used that in an ice cold manner."
Özil did not seem very affected that this decisive game came at his former club. "That was not really important. What was important was that we won. I am happy about the goal and that we defended third place. But now comes the tough game against Hamburg," said Özil.
But before that, the German international received a bit of praise for leading the team. "Mesut really gave us what we needed, especially in the second half. You could see that the fitness which he has now is just important for his game," said defender Per Mertesacker. His coach Thomas Schaaf agreed. "We are happy that Mesut plays for us. In the first half he really wasn't into the game yet. But in the second half he got better and better. And in the end he rewarded himself with the goal," said Schaaf.
Manager Klaus Allofs also praised his playmaker for his performance in a game which was so important for the fight for third place. "Mesut was very good today. He has gotten better and better in the last couple weeks. He was challenged today because we needed him to succeed. That was certainly a big step for his development," said Allofs.
