Werder Bremen are mourning the loss of honorary member Karl Kluge. The former Werder great died on Saturday, 24 April 2010 at the age of 85. Kluge was a member of the Green-Whites since 1940 for nearly 70 years. Along with his former wife Helga Kluge, he was one of the most successful track and field athletes in Werder club history. Kluge spent the last few years in the Austrian capital of Vienna.

Just a couple months ago, Karl Kluge was named a Werder honorary member together with fellow prominent Green-Whites Thomas Schaaf, Klaus Allofs, Otto Rehhagel, Willi Lemke, Manfred Müller and "Kalli" Kamp. "Karl Kluge was always anchored in this club's history books. For a long time he stood for the Werder track and field athlete," said Werder President Klaus-Dieter Fischer.
