Hand! Hand! Upwards of 35,000 Werder fans screamed at the top of their lungs, not believing their own eyes. Cologne defender Pedro Geromel handled a ball, and that deep in stoppage time. Penalty for Werder! And Torsten Frings converted in the absolute final seconds. YEEEESSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!

"There are certainly easier penalties than this one. It was clear that I had to sink it if we still wanted to have chances for third place," said Torsten Frings after his golden goal. And the captain had to breathe a sigh of relief afterwards. "Thank god Cologne handled that ball. That was a present for us, which I was luckily able to take advantage of. I felt good," said Frings, who did not want to talk too much about it. "I am really confident from the spot at the moment. But we don’t want to jinx it because it can turn around. We just have to look past it. We got the tough victory, let’s keep going!"

Head coach Thomas Schaaf also was less than cool in the heated stoppage time minutes. "There are situations which you gladly spare yourself. We would rather have had three points in a calm, clear and early manner. But in the end, we are happy with the result," said the coach. Still Schaaf was not fearful of Torsten Frings not holding his nerves. "I would have liked to have stepped up to the spot. That is a great moment for a footballer. I just thought: Get it in! But I had a lot of confidence in Torsten. He has the quality, has the nerves, and takes responsibility in those kinds of situations. He has already taken many important penalties for us. But there is always a risk," said Schaaf.

The goal was Torsten Frings’s sixth of the season and was the crowning of another strong performance and matched a personal Bundesliga record. Frings scored six goals in the 2001-02 season for Werder Bremen as well as the season before that with Dortmund. Frings was not only the sole goal scorer against Cologne but also set up the most shots on goal (six) and had the most ball touches (102). Frings clearly played a huge role in the victory over Cologne.
