Werder Bremen finally broke through for a deserved 1-0 victory at home over 10-man Cologne in Weser Stadium on the 32nd game day in the Bundesliga. The only goal of the game was scored by captain Torsten Frings, who converted a penalty after a red card spot kick in stoppage time. With the victory, Bremen were able to defend third place in the standings.

The spectators saw an intriguing match from the beginning as Thomas Schaaf’s team struggled against a compact, defensive-minded Cologne side which relied on dangerous counter attacks. Werder had a slight advantage from the start and had a good chance after 33 minutes but Cologne keeper Thomas Kessler made a fine reaction save on Claudio Pizarro’s header as well as the rebound attempt by Torsten Frings. At the other end, Lukas Podolski collected a fine pass from Milivoje Novakovic but shot wide left in the 40th minute as the game was knotted at 0-0 at the halftime break.

The run of play did not change much in the second half with Cologne pulling back defensively while Thomas Schaaf’s team pushed forward continuously looking for the winning goal. Schaaf brought on Hugo Almeida for Aaron Hunt to help the offence. And the Portuguese international had his first chance at the hour mark with his shot going just over the crossbar. And Frings was also just off target four minutes later.

Werder were clearly the better team and increased the pressure on the Cologne goal with Claudio Pizarro missing a header in the 69th minute. Then it was Bremen with the luck three minutes later as Milivoje Novakovic blasted his shot off the crossbar. Kessler made a superb save against Frings just a minute later. But Bremen pushed forward even more and applied more and more pressure until Cologne defender Pedro Geromel handled a ball just in front of his goal line and was dismissed with a red card. Torsten Frings converted the penalty into the lower left corner for a 1-0 Werder victory
