It was the hottest topic other than Werder’s jump to third place: Torsten Frings’s gala in front of the German national team coach Joachim Löw. The Green-Whites’ captain was the fighter, the engine and the top goal scorer for Bremen and had a huge role in the German cup winner’s victory at the German champions. And it was no surprise that manager Klaus Allofs praised Frings after the game. "He had a very good game. He kept pushing his teammates in the second half. He stepped up in the difficult situation to take the penalty. And he scored a sensational second goal. You could see in Dortmund already just how important he is for our team as he was missing. And he proved that again today," said Allofs.
The Werder veteran was not only aggressive on the pitch but also afterwards when he was asked again about his non-chances of playing at the World Cup. Frings was willing to answer openly. "What can I say? I don’t care if the national team coach was in the stadium or not. My World Cup hopes have already been taken away from me, therefore I am not interested in it at all. Everyone knows that it’s not only about performance. My character is not desired very much. I think he saw some good internationals today and went home satisfied," said Frings about Löw. And Frings didn’t mind that the national team coach left before the game ended. "It would have been okay if he had left before my second goal."
Frings’s head coach Thomas Schaaf believed his captain but did not want to talk long about Frings and the national team. "We made our comments about that when the decision was made. Our opinion has not changed. If the national team coach’s decision stands then we have to accept that. Torsten Frings has played an excellent second half of the season. But it’s not in his hands. If things change, then Torsten would be very happy," said Schaaf.
