This crazy Bundesliga final stretch fits in superbly with the Green-Whites’ season thus far. Werder remain consistently inconsistent yet still successful. After two entirely different halves of play, Bremen jumped to third place for at least one night. And Werder fans are overjoyed. "We will discuss the first half internally. Let’s talk about the second half," a well-spirited manager Klaus Allofs told media members after the game. "Once again we were too half-hearted during a half on the pitch. That is a weakness that we have shown for a couple matches now. We just cannot play a full 90 minutes like we did in the second half," said Allofs. Then the former striker talked about the list of positives, which was longer than the negatives for the Wolfsburg game. "Of course I also have to admit that the team continues to pick themselves up and then play as impressively as they did today. On some days we are a team that is among the top three teams in the league."
And the rest of the Werder team agreed with this estimation. "In the first half there were a few points to complain about. But after that, we were aggressive and showed that we absolutely wanted this victory. We did not let Wolfsburg breathe at all. We saw that we are in good physical form and can still push ourselves more. If we can build upon this second half, then third place is a realistic goal," said Clemens Fritz, who had a strong second half.
Third place is a magical goal for centre back Naldo as well. "I am happy that we are there right now. It’s a huge motivation. That was a very important game for us today and Leverkusen lost again. We are back," said Naldo. But head coach Thomas Schaaf wanted to slow down all the euphoria, saying that the current standings should not be overvalued. "They do not mean anything at the moment. Therefore we can only look ahead to our next match and play highly concentrated. One can really lose their way by calculating points, dreaming or thinking about what could be. For us, it’s now Cologne. And we have to play just as concentrated there as we did not in the first half today," said the coach, who has called for training Sunday morning at 10 a.m. as usual.
