On Saturday, 17 April 2010 at 3:30 p.m., Werder Bremen will face off against the yet reigning German champions Wolfsburg, who have found their form after a disappointing first half. Wolfsburg have collected nine points and an 8-0 goal difference in their last three Bundesliga matches and therefore still have the goal of using a late season push to qualify next season for the Europa League.
"Their strong point is their offence," said Werder head coach Thomas Schaaf, talking about the duo of Edin Dzeko and Grafite. The striker duo is "harmonising with one another" according to Schaaf and are willing to set up each other. "In addition, each of them have the potential of doing something special," said the 48-year-old coach. The Bosnian Dzeko has the "technique and the eye" while his Brazilian colleague has the "straightforwardness". And with an explosive and quick Obafemi Martins of Nigeria as the top backup, Wolfsburg have plenty of options in attack. But Werder centre backs Naldo and Per Mertesacker are not the only ones who will have a challenge on their hands. "To limit it to that duo is wrong," said the coach. "The best thing would be to make sure that the whole team makes sure there is no danger."
Despite all of Wolfsburg’s offensive potential, Werder have scored five more goals – namely 63 – to make them the top offence in the Bundesliga. "We enjoy playing up front," said Thomas Schaaf. And his counterpart Lorenz-Günther Köstner will have to avoid taking too many risks. "On good days, Werder can make any team dizzy with their strong individualists," said Köstner on Wolfsburg’s website. "Therefore we have to first challenge our opponents and then play with them, in that order." Werder will certainly want to hold their own and an exciting match between two offensively strong teams is to be expected.
