Claudio Pizarro scored two goals for the third time this season, bringing him ever closer to his big goal of becoming the highest scoring foreigner in German Bundesliga history. The Brazilian star Giovane Elber scored 133 goals between 1994 and 2003 during his time with Stuttgart and Bayern Munich, the latter where he played together with Pizarro. And now that mark is in danger of falling. Pizarro scored goal number 130 in the 35th minute against Freiburg and added number 131 shortly after the break. Some observers may have thought that Pizarro could have set the record in his team’s scoring festival against Freiburg. But Bremen head coach Thomas Schaaf substituted the Peruvian out with 20 minutes remaining. "Ah, we know that Claudio is highly motivated and has a high quality. But he still has a couple games to break the record," said the Bremen coach after the game.
Pizarro also had no problem with being taken out, knowing that the team has yet bigger goals for the season. But he added: "I do hope that I snap Giovane Elber’s record. It would be a big thing for me. I have worked really hard for it. And I will get it done. There are still four games left in this season. I believe and I hope that it works out," said Pizarro after the game.
And if he continues like he did against Freiburg, then Pizarro will get the record for sure. He collected two goals and one assist as the leading force in the Green-Whites’ superb offensive performance. Along with Aaron Hunt, Mesut Özil and Marko Marin, the attack with Pizarro caused nightmares for the Freiburg defence. The quartet combined for seven of the eight scorer’s points on the day. Freiburg coach Robin Dutt could only shake his head after the game. "We didn’t convert our clear chances from Makiadi and Cisse, and then we defended poorly. And in the second half we just could not get the Werder offensive quartet under wraps. After falling behind 2-0 we didn’t have a chance any more," said Dutt.
