The crane arrived Thursday morning after preparations have been on-going since last Tuesday. The East Curve will experience its final hours in the appearance it has had since renovations in 1996. Works on removing the first portions of the roofing over blocks 51 to 53 in the south grandstands/East Curve started in measures which will give Werder fans a new standing room stands, better sanitary facilities, more overheard coverage and even more a truly football stadium.
"We are beginning Thursday afternoon to take down the roof. We will remove two large fields and a smaller section by Friday afternoon," said Helgo Warthold, head of construction for the company PROCON. Every action must be nearly perfect because there is not a lot of time for the first portion of the works. The 50-ton crane and its support of more than 40 yards must be gone by Friday at 6 p.m. because preparations will then begin for the home game against Freiburg. "Then things continue on Monday," said Warthold.
The roofing removal plans are quite ambitious. "Until the home match against Cologne, 80 percent of the roofing surface will be removed. And the East Curve should be completely uncovered by the season finale against Hamburg," said Warthold. But things will be put on hold with the seating until the real reconstruction begins. "All seating will remain until the end of the season. But on May 10, directly after the final game day, things will begin there in earnest."
